Overview
Methodify allows you to export reporting data in CSV or SPSS (.sav) format. These exports can be easily imported into Tableau for deeper analysis, dashboards, and visualization.
This article walks through:
Exporting your data from Methodify
Preparing your file (CSV or SPSS)
Importing the data into Tableau
Validating your fields and starting analysis
Tip: Tableau supports both CSV and SPSS files directly. CSV is generally faster and simpler unless you specifically need SPSS metadata.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have:
A Methodify report export (
.csvor.sav)Tableau Desktop or Tableau Public installed
Basic familiarity with Tableau worksheets
Step 1: Export Your Data from Methodify
From Methodify Reporting:
Navigate to your report
Select Export
Choose one of the following formats:
CSV (recommended for Tableau)
SPSS (.sav)
Save the file locally to your computer.
Recommendation: Use CSV unless you rely on SPSS value labels or variable metadata.
Step 2: Open Tableau and Connect to Your File
Launch Tableau.
From the Tableau start screen:
Click Text File for CSV
Click Statistical File for SPSS
Then browse to your exported Methodify file.
Step 3: Review the Data Source Screen
After selecting your file, Tableau opens the Data Source view.
Here you should:
Confirm your table appears in the canvas
Verify column names and data types
Rename fields if needed (optional)
Key things to check:
Dates are recognized as Date fields
Numeric responses are Numbers
IDs remain Strings
Common adjustments
Click the data type icon to change field types (ABC → Number / Date)
Rename fields by double-clicking headers
Remove extra rows if your CSV contains notes or headers
Once everything looks correct, click Sheet 1 (bottom left).
Step 4: Start Analyzing Your Methodify Data
You’re now in a Tableau worksheet.
From here you can:
Drag dimensions (e.g., Question Text, Region) to Rows/Columns
Drag measures (e.g., Response Count) to create charts
Build filters for demographics or segments
Create dashboards combining multiple views
Notes for SPSS (.sav) Imports
If you exported SPSS:
Tableau automatically reads the
.savfileVariable labels appear as column names
Value labels may be imported as categories
If you need to clean or reshape SPSS data before Tableau, you can preprocess using IBM SPSS Statistics, but this is optional.
Best Practices
Prefer CSV for performance
CSV loads faster and avoids metadata complications.
Keep raw exports unchanged
Create calculated fields inside Tableau instead of editing the CSV.
Save Tableau Extracts
After connecting, go to:
Data → Extract Data
This improves performance on large Methodify datasets.
Troubleshooting
My columns look wrong
Check data types in the Data Source tab
Ensure your CSV delimiter is comma (,)
My file won’t load
Confirm the export completed successfully
Re-export from Methodify if needed
Make sure the file isn’t open in Excel
