MaxDiff powered by Sawtooth

Methodify has partnered with Sawtooth, a leading choice analytics software, to provide a simple way for you to set up your own idea screening project using MaxDiff and launch it with support from our Operations team.

How does it work?

If you have a large number of ideas that you want to test (up to 50), MaxDiff is an ideal way to achieve a ranking of those ideas while minimizing respondent fatigue and potential confusion. Rather than ranking the complete list of ideas, respondents completing a MaxDiff exercise select their best and worst choice from among a series of small subsets of the list. This makes MaxDiff ideal for testing different ideas for product benefits, packages, positioning statements, and need states (just to name a few use case examples).

Respondents who are completing a survey that includes this feature will start within the Methodify survey experience and be seamlessly directed out to a Sawtooth survey and re-directed back to Methodify afterward.

What are the steps?

To get started, select the Idea Screening using MaxDiff tile under Marketplace and click Start Project, you’ll then give your project a name and add your sample to the project. At this stage, you can specify gen pop audiences and add simple targeting to your sample. We’ll soon be adding a new feature which will let you enhance your sample with custom quotas.

Set up the MaxDiff exercise

After adding your sample, click into the survey and open the MaxDiff question type. From here, click on the Visit Sawtooth link to login to Sawtooth to set up the MaxDiff exercise. Contact your account representative to get set up with Sawtooth login credentials and we’ll provide you with an onboarding to the Sawtooth platform as you set up your first study.

Once you’re happy with how your study is set up on Sawtooth, click the "Share" tab and copy the Sawtooth link into the Survey link field on Methodify. 

Select the number of statements you’ve included in the MaxDiff exercise from the dropdown. This will be used in the LOI calculation for the sample pricing for your project.

Click the collaborate icon on your Sawtooth project and add [e-mail].

Confirm you have done this by clicking the check box in the Methodify questionnaire and press save.

The settings for the MaxDiff question on Methodify have been defaulted with the optimal set-up for Sawtooth.

• Sample questions and passing of parameters are both defaulted on so that the data collected from the sample questions can be passed to Sawtooth and included as filters in the analysis
• Instructions to respondents before they are sent over to Sawtooth are turned on by default as well

What are the costs?

You’ll see the costs & CPI for your project in the top right corner of the project page. The costs include a Sawtooth platform usage fee and the sample costs based on the number of statements you've entered in the MaxDiff question.
